William Bailey Avery
William Bailey Avery, a private in the 1st Rhode Island Regiment of Volunteer Infantry, fought at Bull Run (July 21, 1861). Later, as a lieutenant in the New York Marine Artillery Regiment, Avery earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at Tranter's Creek, a battle that was part of Major General Ambrose Burnside's North Carolina expedition.
